Classes are $5.00 for students and $7.00 for non-students. If you come to class on Monday, you can come on Wednesday for free! Prices are back to the normal rate since we can now run two classes a week.
If it's your first time in class, it's free as well, so bring all your friends!

Hi everyone,

The UCanDance ball is coming up on Saturday the 10th of October. Get your outfits ready for this years theme is Steampunk! You don't want to miss out, this is our biggest event of the year. Food and drinks will be provided for the evening. There will be live performances at the event to showcase different dance styles from around the city.

Hey everyone!

This weeks class on 19/8 and the end of term Pajama Party have been canceled.

With the level 2 lockdown in place until the 26th, we're canceling classes and events until the restrictions are lifted. Unfortunately, this period overlaps with the end of term party as well. We have a couple of events set for the holidays that will go ahead depending on the lockdown situation

Rites of Spring
Our celebration for the arrival of Spring. A UcanDance tradition where we welcome in spring by swimming at Sumner Beach at midnight! We'll be meeting at Sumner Beach at around 11.30pm, but may meet in town for some desert and dancing beforehand. This will be organised based on demand.

Welcome to another week of UCanDance classes. We're in DW1 again with some fresh Modern Jive and Rueda moves for you all, and as always, you don't need to come every week to join in :)
Last week was free but this one isn't - remember to bring your cash! We also have internet banking available.

This Week's Classes

Our schedule for Monday and Wednesday night will be:

• 7:00pm: Doors open - During this time you can meet and greet other new members, our committee, and some of our teachers! Or even better, ask someone to dance and practice your moves!

• 7.15-8.00: Modern Jive class

• 8.00-8.15: Notices and MJ social dancing.

• 8.15-9.00: Rueda class

• 9:00-10:00: Social dancing to finish the night! Use this time to practice the moves you've learned on the dance floor, get some pro tips from our teachers, and be sure to join in the social ruedas!

First Class

We are back for 2020! We've got two great classes plus some other cool things lined up for you tomorrow night, from 7pm in DW1.

• 7:00pm: Doors open - During this time you can meet and greet other new members, our committee, and some of our teachers!

• 7.15-8.00: Modern Jive class

• 8.00-8.15: Modern Jive demo followed by committee introductions, and a small social dance break.

Hi everyone!

As you will have seen on Facebook, our classes start back next Monday the 24th of February - we can't wait! There will be committee introductions, a couple of awesome demos from our teachers showing what kinds of dance you'll be learning this term, and two classes followed by social dancing into the night.

Clubs Day

Before our classes start, make sure you come and join us on Clubs Day! We will be stall number 40, in the space between Ernest Rutherford building and the C block lawn, on Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th of February. Listen out for the music and come dance with us!
Also, be sure to check out the cheeky chalking some of our committee dotted around campus on the weekend :P
As always, it is free to sign up, so make sure you let all your friends know about joining the friendliest club on campus :D

Hi everyone!

We are so excited to be bringing you another great year of UCanDance. We have so many fun things planned, and can't wait to see you at our first events!

Clubs Day

UCanDance will have a stall at Clubs Day as usual, just listen out for the music and come and see some of our dancers in action! We will be at Haere Roa (the new UCSA building) on Tuesday the 18th, and Wednesday the 19th, of February from 11am-2pm.

At the stall you can sign up as a member, which is free as always, and if you would like, purchase a concession card for our classes. These will be at our special discounted prices for a limited time only! Bring your friends along - UCanDance is one of the friendliest clubs out there, and a great way to meet new people! We will have some awesome tunes, and some of our crew will be demonstrating the various styles we teach at the club.

Clubs Day is a free event, and maps and Clubs Guides will be available on the UCSA website and at the event.

First Class of the Year

Classes resume on Monday the 24th of February, and will be held in DW1, a studio in the Jack Mann auditorium on Dovedale campus. We are so excited to be using this venue this year, especially as it's so close to the main campus!

In term 1, we will be teaching Modern Jive and Rueda. Modern Jive is a fun, easy to learn contemporary style, and Rueda is a Latin style danced in a circle with the moves called out! Our passionate teachers go through various forms of training and are outstanding dancers in their chosen styles.

Classes will run on Mondays and Wednesdays at the following times:

• Doors open (7:00pm)

• Modern Jive (7:15 - 8:00pm)

• Small break for social dancing and notices (8:00pm - 8:15pm)

• Rueda (8:15 - 9:00pm)

It has been great to see so many new faces the past few weeks. We hope you're enjoying our classes! No normal classes August 12, 14

We could not book Riccarton Hall on the 12th and 14th of August, so there will not be class there. Instead, join us for two one-off events.

Monday August 12, we will hold a night of Rueda. Have you been at UCanDance and wondered what is going on when someone calls out "Rueda!" and a large group amasses to mysteriously dance complex patterns around a circle? This is Rueda, a form of Cuban salsa where people dance salsa patterns as directed by a caller. Come along to learn moves like Pise and Dame so that you can join in on future rueda songs!

Special Class - Lindy hop

The 2019 Hanmer Trip this past weekend was a big success! The weather was clear and surprisingly warm, and Loz's dance party playlist included many "Under-the-sea" themed songs. The price is $70, which includes 3 meals, accommodation, transport, visiting the hot pools, and a dance party.

What better way to spend a chilly winter's eve than pirouetting across ice? Of course Christchurch is too warm for outdoor ice rinks, so we're meeting at Alpine Ice instead.

Hello Everyone!

Thank you to everyone who came along to the End of Term party, we hope you all had a great night.

Here at UCanDance we are enjoying a small break from classes, planning events to be held after Exams, and getting ready for next semester! We will return to regular classes on Monday, July 15th.

Social Dancing over break

There are a myriad of other dance opportunities in Christchurch where you can have fun, meet new people, and get some practice and exercise while UCanDance is on holiday.

If you enjoy Salsa and Bachata, Casa Publica has Latin dance nights every Thursday, from 8:30pm to late.

If Modern Jive is more your thing, there are two upcoming social dance nights at A Rolling Stone, on June 15th and June 30th.

It's pretty intimidating to up and go to these on your own! We will be making facebook posts in the UCanDance group to share when some of the Committee are going out dancing.

Holiday events

After exams end we will be organising some dance and social events, like meeting up at the Dance-o-mat, going ice skating, maybe going to karaoke, or watching a movie. Dates and events are still to be confirmed - we will send out a poll to see when the most people are free.

Semester 2 price increase

Starting semester 2, class and concession card prices will be increasing. We do this with a heavy heart, but we have been hard-pressed to afford our venue and pay our teachers the past few years.

The new prices are

• $5 Students/$7 Non-Students

• $40 for a Student Concession Card/$60 Non-Student

Same as before, if you attend Monday's class, you can come to Wednesday's for free.

If any of you still want to purchase a concession card at the past rate of $25/$45, you may do this through internet banking anytime before classes resume on Monday July 15th.

Semester 2 venue - Always Riccarton

We will be changing our Monday venue at the start of term 3. Instead of one night in Burnside, one in Riccarton, both Monday and Wednesday classes will be held in Riccarton High School Hall.

Hanmer trip info

It's not too late to sign up for the winter Hanmer trip! The UCanDance Hanmer Weekend is a great chance to get to know your fellow dancers better while dancing the night away and soaking in the hot pools the next day. The cost is $70, which includes accommodation, 3 meals, a dance party, and entry to the hot spring. Signups are now available online through UCanDance Hanmer Signup.

Hanmer weekend

Every winter UCanDancers spend a weekend dancing and relaxing in Hanmer Springs. This years' Hanmer trip will be held on July 27th and 28th. Signups are now available online through UCanDance Hanmer Signup. The cost is $70, which covers transport, dancing, entry to the hot pools, and all meals except Saturday lunch. Register quickly, because we are limited to 40 people.

Term one comes to an end this week, but hopefully you aren't too swamped to come to one last week of class. Read further for information on upcoming holiday classes and annual events.

Holiday classes

During term break we will be running workshops every Wednesday in DW1 (In the Jack Mann theatre on Dovedale Campus). Join our fantastic teachers to learn more about technique and styling.

Wednesday 10 April: MJ Foundation Technique with Jeremy and Jess
Wednesday 17 April: Latin Styling and Musicality with Michael Hobbs and Amelia
Wednesday 24 April: MJ Styling and Musicality with Jeremy and Jess

Doors open at 7pm, with the workshop running from 7:15 - 8:15, followed by free dance until 9:15. Hope to dance with you there!

Special class: Chacha

Join us for the first special class of the year: five weeks of chacha classes for only $25! Experienced teachers from Latin Fire will be teaching this five week set, which starts at a total beginner friendly level and progresses each week.

The course runs all of term 2, from Wednesday 1 May through Wednesday 29 May. You can sign up at the door and pay either at the door or online. More information can be found on the Facebook event.

Term 2 classes

In term two, we will be teaching Modern Jive and Salsa. Class times for Mondays, in Burnside High, are as follows:

• Doors open (7:00pm, Burnside HS)

• Modern Jive (7:15 - 8:00pm),

• Free dance (8:00 - 8:15pm),

• Salsa (9:15pm - 9:00pm),

• Free dance (9:00pm - 10:00pm).

Class times for Wednesdays, in Riccarton High, are different because of our Special Class: Chacha

• Doors open (7.00pm, Riccarton HS)

• Chacha (7:05 - 7:50pm)

• Modern Jive (7:55 - 8:40pm)

• Salsa (8:45 - 9:30pm)

• Free dance (9:30 - 10:00pm)

Classes are $3.00 for students and $5.00 for non-students. And, if you come to class on Monday, you can come on Wednesday for free!

Welcome Back Party

Our first dance party of the year will be on Saturday 27 April from 8pm - 11pm at Riccarton High School. The theme is Half n' Half, so come dressed in a skirt and waistcoat; half red, half blue; as a bizarre chimera; or any half/half combination you can think of!

Tickets are $5 at the door. Dress up, bring your friends, and dance, socialise, and eat snacks.

On Wednesday we are having a Bring a Friend Night. Bring all of your friends, make your friends bring their friends, get everyone to come along and share the enjoyment of dancing. This class is free for anyone who has never been to a UCanDance class before, so your friends have no excuses not to come.

Classes

Clubs Day runs tomorrow, Tuesday 19 February and Wednesday 20 February from 11 - 2. Come and show your support of the club, dance to some music, and bring your friends! You can find our table between North Arts and Locke.

We will also be selling club t-shirts ($15), drawstring bags ($10), and class concession cards ($25 for students, $45 for non-students).

Hello Everyone!

Hope you are all having a great summer and are ready to get back into the new year of dance. We have a number of events coming up, outlined in this email.

UCanDance-o-mat

Join us for the last three summer UCanDance-o-mat gatherings on Sundays 20 January (today), 3 February, and 17 February, from 4-6pm. We will play a variety of music for your dancing fun, so put on your dancing shoes and bring your friends!

UCanDance Picnic

The height of summer requires two things - good food and good friends. Next Saturday, 26 January, at 12pm, come to the Botanic Gardnes for lunch, chats, and dancing in the grass. Please bring food or drink to share, and a picnic blanket if you have one. You'll find us set up on Archery Lawn, near Regret Fountain (the sad mask fountain behind the museum).

Clubs Day

The academic year is soon to begin, and with that comes Clubs Day. Clubs Day will be on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 February. If you wish to be involved with the club this year, you'll need to sign up on our 2019 members' list, available at Clubs Day and on the door when classes resume.

Hello Everyone!

Thank you all for a great year with us at UCanDance. I already miss seeing all of you at class twice a week. If, like me, you are wondering how you can keep up your dancing and dance-dependent social circle over the holidays, there are many clubs and opportunities for partner dancing in Christchurch. Plus, some of our members are already part of these clubs, so you will see familiar faces.

Where to dance?

If you're looking to improve your Salsa or Bachata, check out Latin Fire. The next beginner Salsa course starts tonight, Mon 29 Oct, at 6:00pm.

If Modern Jive is more your style, Fevah MJ classes run every week night at 7:30pm in various venues throughout the city.

For those of you who enjoyed Lauren's Charleston special class, or wish you had signed up, Swingtown Rebels offers a wide range of dances, including Charleston, Lindy Hop, Blues, and Balboa. The next beginner Lindy Hop course starts this Wednesday 31 Oct.

For other styles we haven't taught but you might like to try your foot at, Brazilian Beatz offers open level Zouk classes Friday evenings, and Tango Floorspace has a new beginner Tango session starting this Wednesday. Both styles are great for partner connection.

Of course, dance classes are fairly $$, but there are still ways to dance even on a tight budget. For free Latin dancing, Casa Publica hosts Thursday Latin nights every week, and SLaM is a night of dance every last Sunday.

UCanDance events

Keep an eye out for fun, free events we will hold over summer, like picnics in the botanic gardens or dancing at the Dance-o-mat. We'll send out an email and post on the facebook page prior to any event.

AGM

The AGM is on instead of class tonight from 7:00pm-9:30pm in Undercroft101 on UC campus. If you're interested in joining the committee for next year then you will need to be there.

We encourage all of our members to attend if they can since we want as much input on how the club should be run next year as possible, and need a Quorum of members to vote in the new committee.

YouDay Tuesday

Some of you may already have heard of YouDay Tuesday. It's an event happening on C-block lawn tomorrow from 11-1 focusing on student well-being. There will be a variety of clubs/groups hosting stalls (including UCanDance) as well as free food!

We'll be running a beginner Modern Jive class from 12-1 for anyone who wants to attend so come along and have some fun. Having people there who have danced before makes it much easier for new people to learn + the more people, the more fun.

We'll be dancing and chatting at the stall from 11 and for a little while after the class too, so come down and see us even if you're not doing the class.

Hello Everyone!

The Mythological Ball is happening this weekend but the fun doesn't stop there. We have events happening all the way to the end of the university year.

The Mythological Ball is almost here!

Tickets are at long last on sale in class for the ball which is on this Saturday at 8pm.

Tickets cost $18 for students and $20 for non-students however they cost $25 cash for everyone on the door. As such, make sure you get your ticket before the event either online or in class.

It's a busy term here at UCanDance so have a scroll through this email and see if any events catch your eye. Be sure to check the updated class times for Wednesdays this term and consider helping out with decorating the Mythological Ball or registering your interest in joining the 2019 committee.

Solo Charleston Special Class

UCanDance's second special class of the year is be solo Charleston! This is an active, jazzy, musical, and most of all fun vintage dance style!

The classes are on every Wednesday at 7pm and run for the first 5 weeks of term (last class is Weds 10 October). You can still join in the class even if you missed out last week. Sign up in class tonight or on Wednesday for $16 cash which covers the remaining 4 classes.

Each class runs from 7:05pm-7:50pm so be on time!

Changes to Wednesday class times

Due to the special class on Wednesdays the timetable for the evening is slightly different to usual. The class times are:

Mythological Ball - Online tickets available

UCanDance is having a ball, a Mythology themed ball! Get creative & inspire us with your costumes! The ball is on the 29th of September from 8 pm until midnight at the Brazilian Beatz dance studio, 407 Tuam Street.

Tickets are $18 for students, $20 for non-students, and $25 on the door. Included in the ticket price is one free beverage, but additional drinks are available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased either in class or online. Door tickets are cash only and we will also have non-alcoholic drinks to purchase on the night. Delicious sweet and savoury nibbles will also be provided at no cost, and there will be a themed and decorated photo booth to save your memories of the night!
There will also be some awesome performances to show off some different dancers and styles from around Christchurch.

Decoration helpers for the ball

We're in need of a few wonderful UCanDancers to help decorate the venue for the ball during the afternoon of the ball. We'd also like you to help out with planning and creating the decorations if you can.

Hello Everyone!

We hope you've all had a refreshing break from University or at the least an enjoyable few weeks if you're not a student.

Term 4 classes start tonight!

Term 4 classes start today and will run until Wednesday the 17th of October. Doors open on Mondays at 8pm and on Wednesdays at 7pm as usual. However, Wednesdays will have a special class running from 7:05pm-7:50pm (read on for details). As such, Modern Jive class will begin at 8pm on a Wednesday.

Check out the class times for specifics.

The final week of classes (15th October and 17th October) will run slightly differently. Monday is the AGM which we encourage everyone to attend especially if you're interested in running for committee next year. Wednesday is the annual chocolate giveaway which is an awesome night of friendly dance competitions and (of course) chocolate consumption. Keep an eye out for details later in the term.

Hello Everyone!

It's the university holidays, so we hope all our student members are having a well deserved break. Hopefully those pesky lecturers haven't been setting assignments due at the start of next term again! Condolences to all of the non-students who have to work as if nothing has changed, at least you don't have tests and exams to worry about.

No classes over the holidays

The university holidays are officially under way so there will be no UCanDance classes for 2 weeks. Normal classes resume on Monday the 10th of September.

Rites of Spring

This is an annual UCanDance tradition, and an epic way to say goodbye to Winter and welcome in Spring! Please join us as we make a mad run into the ocean at midnight on the last night of Winter, then dry off and shiver in good company on the beach :)

What: Jumping into the ocean at Sumner beach at midnight to usher in the Spring with all your UCanDance friends!
When: Friday August 31st, 11:59pm

Hello Everyone!

First off, thank you to everyone who came out to the Dance-O-Mat last night. It was heaps of fun and we managed to get some passers by dancing!

We have a venue for class this Wednesday - Papanui High School Hall.

UCSA Elections

A reminder for our UC student members that the elections for the 2019 student association executive open today and close on Friday.
We encourage you all to vote and have a voice in what the student association focuses on next year. You should receive an email through your UC account later today with the link to the voting.
Information about the candidates can also be found outside the UCSA office in the undercroft.

First off, thank you to everyone who came out to the Dance-O-Mat last night. It was heaps of fun and we managed to get some passers by dancing!

We have a venue for class this Wednesday - Papanui High School Hall.

Hello Everyone!

There's been a change to our regularly scheduled classes tonight but tonight's class has been replaced by an awesome social event!

We also have an end of term party this Saturday and the Rites of Spring event in a short couple of weeks.

Class changes (this week only)

Due to school exams Riccarton High School is unavailable for class. As such there will be a social event tonight instead of the Monday class. We're having a dinner and dance event in town to satisfy your dance craving!

Tonight: Dinner and Dancing
Description: Dinner at Little High eatery then heading to the Dance-O-Mat for a quick lesson (beginner and intermediate friendly). You're welcome to eat your own dinner then meet us at the Dance-O-Mat at 8pm.

When: 6:30pm at Little High eatery then 8pm at the Dance-O-Mat tonight.
Cost: Bring some $2 coins to keep the music going.
Event: Dinner and dancing

Wednesday class may still happen but not at Riccarton high. Keep an eye out for another email with further details.

Normal classes resume next week which is the final week of classes for the term.

End of term party

While it's not quite the end of term, the comics and cartoons party is happening this Saturday due to the venue being unavailable next weekend. Get dressed up for an exciting evening of dance and we'll see you there!

Rites of spring

This is an annual UCanDance tradition, and an epic way to say goodbye to Winter and welcome in Spring! Please join us as we make a mad run into the ocean at midnight on the last night of Winter, then dry off and shiver in good company on the beach :)

What: Jumping into the ocean at Sumner beach at midnight to usher in the Spring with all your UCanDance friends!
When: Friday August 31st, 11:59pm
Event: Rites of Spring

Please bring your togs, towels, VERY warm clothing (for before and after), a torch if you have/want one, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages!

Hello Everyone!

We've got several of exciting events coming up so read on to find out all the details you require.

Bring a friend night tonight!

Today at 7pm at Riccarton High School(same as usual) we'll be running beginner classes for people new to UCanDance.

Anyone who hasn't been to a UCanDance class before can attend for free so bring along all your friends and relations who've ever expressed interest in learning to dance.

UCanDance gets a lift

Next Friday (10th August) at 12pm we're trying to fit 27 people(the maximum allowed) into a lift in central library.

We need people to fill the lift so mark yourself as going on the Facebook event and come along for what's sure to be a.....memorable experience.

Comics and Cartoons Party

We've got an End of Term party happening in a few short weeks. Get dressed up as you favourite comic or cartoon character for an awesome night of dancing!

Mythological Ball

The annual UCanDance ball will be happening on the 22nd of September at Brazilian Beats dance studio.

The theme is Mythology so start preparing a cool costume.

Tickets can be bought in class(with cash) or online (coming soon). Prices as below:
- Student: $18
- Non-Student: $20
- On the door: $25
